Riordan Mansion

Riordan Mansion is a large mansion build by Michael and Timothy Riordan in 1904. It is 13,000 square feet of living place built upon about 5 acres of land. The Riordans were a very significant family in Flagstaff’s history and helped develop industries such as lumber, railroad, cattle, banking and even had an influence in the political environment of the town. The architect for this home, Charles Whittlesey, also designed the El Tovar hotel in the Grand Canyon. This site is a historic example of Flagstaff’s rich past.

About the Tours

Reservations are not required but highly suggested. The tour will take about an hour to complete. Photography and Videotaping are not permitted during these tours but at all other times feel free to document your time on the grounds however you wish. These tours will cover information on the Riordan family history, the architecture of the building, and the facts about the furniture that fills it.

Museum/ Exhibits

The visitor center was formally the house’s automobile garage and now houses the historical exhibits on the Riordan family. The courtyard is available for weddings and there are picnic tables near the parking lot to eat a bagged lunch if you have it. There are restaurants surrounding the park and within walking distance but there are none on the grounds.

Logistics

Even though the property is preserved and not in functional use there are restrooms in the visitor center that are handicap accessible. In that same visitor center, there is a Riordan Mansion Flagstaff gift shop where you can buy souvenir items ranging from books to T-shirts.

Riordan Mansion Flagstaff Wildlife

The Riordan Mansion Flagstaff park is located in the city and sits right next to the NAU campus and popular shops such as Bookmans and Micheals. For this reason, there is limited wildlife in the area. Mostly the animals you may see consist of ravens, squirrels chipmunks, lizards, and hummingbirds. Please do not feed these creatures and or take them home with you. If you happen to catch any of them, a word of advice: the tails on the lizards fall off.
